Why a Gas Log Set Might Be Perfect for You

Everybody loves a fireplace, but not everybody loves the work involved in keeping one clean and working safely. A gas log set is a great choice for busy people who want a lovely, real-fire visual but aren’t interested in spending time managing a traditional fireplace.

What are gas log sets?

Gas log sets are a collection of faux logs that are made to look remarkably like actual stacked firewood harvested from trees in a forest, complete with irregular shapes, bark patterns, and unique coloring.

Connected to a gas or propane line, gas log sets aren’t fireplaces. They don’t come with a housing or shell that requires you to tear out part of a wall to install them. Rather, they’re designed to be placed into the firebox of an existing fireplace.

Vented gas logs vent through the drafting system that’s part of the fireplace they’re used in. Non-vented logs require no venting. (Note that laws in some states and jurisdictions prohibit the use of non-vented gas log sets.)

How do they look?

The brilliant flames produced by modern gas logs will amaze you. While the logs aren’t real, the flames are, and they’ll provide many soothing, relaxing days and evenings as you gather by the fire for entertaining, watching TV or just kicking back and taking it easy.

You can add a variety of accents around a gas log set, such as attractive river rocks, non-combustible bark chips, and fancy lighting to showcase the firebox when it’s not in use.

What about heat?

Modern gas log sets from leading manufacturers in the hearth industry are designed to be efficient heat producers. Non-vented logs will create more heat than the vented variety. And any type of log set running on propane will burn hotter than one running on natural gas.

Are they easier to use than a standard fireplace?

Most gas log sets can be controlled with a switch or a remote. Depending on the style, fires are ignited manually or automatically. With a built-in thermostat, you can easily adjust the heat output and size of the flames for a customized look and comfort level.

How much time will I spend maintaining a gas log set?

About as much time as it takes to wipe down the logs and periodically vacuum normal household dust out of the firebox. An annual inspection by a gas fireplace technician is recommended.

gas log services in Paoli PASo there’s no creosote buildup?

No. Creosote happens when smoke from a wood fire condenses inside a chimney or vent pipe. Gas burns clean and won’t require that you schedule yearly chimney sweeping service to clean out all the gunk.

Can I install my own gas log set?

You may be able to, but it’s better to leave that job to an experienced gas technician. This person knows how to run the gas lines, ensure that the logs are properly connected and placed, and make sure the venting system is safe and appropriate for your style of log set.
